Excerpt from article:
Your airplane ride may be the safest part of your day.

Frequent fliers, you may have heard the legend of the pilot who bid passengers farewell after landing with these words: “The safest part of your trip is now over.” That isn’t just one pilot’s boast, it’s a truth most air travelers take for granted. Next time you climb into a taxi to make the trip from the airport to your final destination, consider this: What do you know about the cabbie in whose hands you have placed your life? How well has that car been maintained? Look out the window—are all the signal lights working? Is the road in good shape? What about the other motorists? Where did they learn to drive? How conscientious have they been about getting enough sleep and avoiding alcohol?

The Regional Airline Association (RAA) today welcomed the release of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) report, “Answering the Call to Action on Airline Safety and Pilot Training.” The report describes the progress made in response to FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s June 2009 Call to Action on airline safety.

“Regional airlines applaud the leadership Administrator Babbitt has taken to further enhance aviation safety,” said RAA President Roger Cohen. “This report confirms the excellent safety record of regional airlines, which are committed to the highest professional standards.”

The FAA’s report shows the effectiveness of regional airline training and safety programs. Following the Call to Action, FAA inspectors observed 2,419 training and checking programs. They determined that 99.4% of these programs met or exceeded federal requirements.

“Regional airlines make more than five million safe departures a year,” Cohen said, “but we agree with Administrator Babbitt that ‘an almost perfect record is not enough.’ Regional airlines have a strong safety culture that is the foundation for tireless improvement in accident prevention. Our industry’s response to the Call to Action is an example of how the FAA, airlines and labor organizations can enhance safety through collaboration.”

As part of their response to the Call to Action, regional airlines are participating in the Aviation Rulemaking Committee (AVC) Administrator Babbitt established in June to address Flight and Duty Time Limitations and Rest Requirements (FDR). The committee is developing recommendations for a new FAA regulation on the amount of time pilots will be required to rest between shifts.

Cohen also emphasized that regional airlines uphold the values of professionalism and accountability that Administrator Babbitt identified as essential to safety.

“Every regional airline puts safety first,” said Cohen. “And every employee of every regional airline is 100 percent accountable for safety.”

The Regional Airline Association (RAA) today applauded the Obama Administration’s nomination of Dr. Earl F. Weener to the National Transportation Safety Board.

“The Regional Airline Association is thrilled with President Obama’s decision to nominate Dr. Earl Weener to such an important post in his administration,” said Roger Cohen, president of RAA. “Dr. Weener’s background and demonstrated commitment to aviation safety make him the right person for this key position, and having the right person at the National Transportation Safety Board has never been more important.”

Dr. Weener, a fellow at the Flight Safety Institute, has played a key role in the aviation industry’s ongoing safety programs, including the development of a pilot fatigue mitigation tool kit. As part of its Strategic Safety Initiative (SSI), RAA has included a Fatigue Study, which is designed to determine the effects of workload on pilot fatigue. Dr. Weener’s Fatigue Management Tool Kit provides airlines with an industry leading resource document that RAA members will use to develop and enhance their fatigue training programs.

The RAA strongly supports the nomination of Dr. Weener to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and calls for swift action from the United States Senate to schedule a confirmation hearing. Additionally, the RAA urges President Obama to fulfill the remaining vacant NTSB seat. The NTSB’s investigative capabilities and objectivity are crucial to understanding the underlying causes of aviation accidents and providing the recommendations essential to continuing to improve air transportation safety.
